When to go: Uganda’s two dry seasons

There is no winter on the equator. What changes through the year is the rain.

Uganda sits on the equator, so the temperature hardly changes from month to month. The rain does. There are two dry seasons, roughly December to February and June to August, with rainy seasons in between.

The dry seasons

Trails are firmer, roads are easier and the grass is shorter, which makes wildlife easier to see. It is also the busiest time for gorilla trekking, so permits go early.

The rainy seasons

The rain rarely lasts all day. Expect showers in the afternoon, deep green forests and fewer visitors. Birding is at its best when the migrants arrive, from around November to April.

Choose the month for the animals you most want to see, then plan the rest around it.

Matching the month to the trip

Gorillas and chimpanzees can be tracked all year, though the trails are easier when it is dry. Murchison Falls and Queen Elizabeth are at their best for game viewing when the grass is short. The wheel on our home page shows each month at a glance.
