What to pack for a Uganda safari

You do not need much, but a few things make a real difference.

Forested hills of Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

A safari in Uganda is not a fashion show. Pack for walking, for changing weather and for early starts, and leave the rest at home.

Clothes

Bring light, quick-drying layers in neutral colours such as green, khaki and brown. Mornings in the forest and on the mountains are cool and afternoons are warm, so layers matter, and a light rain jacket is useful in any month. Avoid dark blue and black, which attract tsetse flies in some parks.

For gorilla and chimpanzee treks

Wear sturdy boots with a good grip, long trousers and long sleeves, because there are stinging nettles on the trails. Gloves help you grip the vegetation on steep slopes, and a walking stick is a good idea. Porters are available to carry your bag.

Everything else

Binoculars, a camera with spare batteries, a head torch, insect repellent, sunscreen, a hat and a refillable water bottle. Choose soft bags over hard suitcases, especially if your trip includes domestic flights, because small aircraft have tight luggage limits.
